Minced meat and mashed potato are a good match almost in every recipe that you can find. I came across some classic British recipe of the Cottage Pie and decided to make my own spin on it. The pie turned out very tasty, so I decide to share the recipe with you. You can make this easy but at the same time delicious and tender potato casserole with minced meat inside and crunchy crust.
Meat and mashed potato pie is a perfect rich dish for a family dinner. If you have mashed potato leftovers, this pie is a perfect way to reuse it. You can experiment with stuffing. There are many options to choose from, for example, sautéed mushrooms, simply grated cheese, your favorite type of minced meat or smoked fish. My favorite thing in this recipe is how juicy stuffing, tender mash and crunchiness of the top layer are combined.
Mashed Potato Pie Ingredients:
- 800 g potatoes;
- 2 eggs;
- 50 ml milk;
- 500 g minced beef (or any type of meat of your choice);
- 1 onion;
- 40 g cheese;
- 80 g sour cream;
- 25 g unsalted butter;
- 2 tbsps. oil;
- 2 garlic cloves;
- coriander to your taste;
- oregano to your taste;
- freshly grated nutmeg or mace;
- salt and pepper to your taste.
How to make casserole with mashed potatoes and minced meat at home:
- First, let’s make the mash. Cut peeled potatoes into cubes, put them into the pot and cover with water. Get water to boil on the high heat and then reduce to low. Cook potato until cooked through (around 20 minutes depending on the type and the size of cubes).
- Drain all the water; mash it thoroughly with a handheld potato masher (I do not like to use all the electric appliances because of the texture they leave). Add butter, milk and eggs. Blend all the ingredients with mashed potatoes until smooth and creamy.
To get the mixture consistency right, make sure to stir them into the mash at once as you beat them in. The key is not to get them cooked (in this way, they will leave visible white strings).
- Add mace or freshly ground nutmeg into mashed potatoes, stir it in and leave it to cool down.
- Meanwhile, we will make the stuffing. Heat oil in the skillet; add chopped onion and sauté for 2 minutes or so (until soft).
- Add minced meat and cook it until it browns, stir it constantly and do not forget to break it up into small pieces with a wooden spoon in the process. When you see that the meat is cooked through, season it to your taste with salt and black pepper.
- Preheat oven at 350˚F/180˚C.
- Take a baking pan that you will be using for the recipe and cover the insides with a parchment paper. Divide mashed potatoes into two parts. Use the first one for the bottom layer, even out the mash with a spoon or spatula.
- Place cooked minced meat with onion over mashed potatoes, even out this layer, too.
- Shred cheese with a grater. Take half of it and sprinkle over the minced meat.
- For the top layer, take left mash and even out it over the minces meat with shredded cheese. Smear the layer with sour cream.
- Sprinkle shredded cheese over the sour cream.
- Bake potato pie for 30-35 minutes or until the top layer is golden as on the picture. Let it cool down before cutting into pieces and serving.
Enjoy your meal!
