Are you excited about making porridge but unsure whether to use water or milk? Great news—why not use both? There are so many creative ways to whip up this delightful dish! One fun idea is to heat leftover preboiled rice with milk for a quick treat. Alternatively, you can boil the rice in water and then stir in the milk, which is the method I’ll be using in this recipe. You can even start with milk right from the get-go! Don’t forget to personalize your porridge with your favorite jam, fresh or dried berries, a dash of vanilla, or a sprinkle of cinnamon for a delicious breakfast that’s uniquely yours!

What kind of rice is used for porridge? You should use short/round grain rice for making milk porridge. After boiling, short-grain rice becomes very tender and soft. It absorbs more liquid while cooking, which is why it is suitable for sweet dishes.

What is the ratio of rise to liquid for the porridge recipe? As a rule, you should use 4.5 parts of liquid for 1 part of rice to get the consistency that you see in the photos. To make porridge runnier, for example, use two parts of water for boiling rice and 3 parts of milk for the next step.

How long do you boil rice for porridge? I cook rice for 10-15 minutes in water (until it fully evaporates) and then 10- 15 minutes in milk. So, you will spend around 30 minutes cooking rice porridge. Do not forget to add 5-10 minutes of the porridge cooling down process before serving. So, 40 minutes, and your breakfast is ready.

Milk Porridge with Rice Ingredients:

Sweet Rice Porridge Ingredients

  • 200 g round/short grain rice;
  • 500 ml milk;
  • 400 ml water;
  • a pinch of salt;
  • 1 tbsp. sugar;
  • 50 g unsalted butter.

How to make porridge with rice and milk:

  • Before making anything with rice on the stove, do not forget to rinse it thoroughly. I tend to do this the following way: take a bowl and add rice, pour cold water to fully cover the grain in the bowl, and then drain the water; repeat these steps until drained water becomes transparent. I had to pour water at least 5 times.

Rinse rice before boiling

  • Pour a specified amount of water into the pot with rinsed rice. Place it on the high heat on the stove.

Cover rice in the pot with cold water

  • When water boils reduce heat to a minimum for water to simmer slightly.

Let rice simmer on the low heat

  • It will take you from 10 to 15 minutes to get all the water evaporated from the rice.

Cook until all water evaporates

  • Then I pour milk into the pot with boiled rice. My tip will be to warm up milk in a saucepan before pouring it into the pot.

Add milk

  • Add a pinch of salt. Bring milk to a boil on high heat and then reduce it again to a minimum.

Get milk to boil

  • Cook rice with milk for 10 minutes and keep constantly stirring, as there is a high possibility of burning it on the stove. Do not leave porridge out of your sight while it is boiling on the stove.

Let porridge simmer on the low heat again

  • The amount of milk I gave in the list of ingredients is approximate. You can have the consistency that you prefer in the porridge by adding more or less milk. Bear in mind that porridge stiffens while getting cold. Add sugar.

Add sugar to your porridge

  • When porridge is ready, take it from the heat and add butter. Cover the pot with a lead and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Add butter cover the pot with a lid

  • Add berries of your choice to give porridge those mouthwatering colors that no one can resist! Enjoy your meal!

What type of pot is best for cooking rice porridge with milk? A classic stainless steel pot or a saucepan with a non-stick surface will be perfect choices. The first option’s pot bottom heats evenly, preventing your porridge from burning. The second option is designed to boil porridge in it.

Do you boil rice porridge with a lid on or off? You cook porridge in a pot without covering it with a lid, as you have to stir rice constantly.

What do I do if the liquid has evaporated but the rice is still not ready? You can add more liquid, such as water or milk (but remember that all the liquids you add should be boiled already).

When do you add butter to porridge? I like to add butter as the last step before covering the pot with a lid and leaving it aside from the heat. Then, before serving porridge on a deep plate, I stir melted butter into the porridge. I came across recipes where you add butter to porridge on a plate.

How many calories are in rice porridge with milk? You get 143 kcal per 100 g of rice porridge with milk (if you added the same amount of ingredients and kept the ratio of rice to liquid).

How long do you store rice porridge with milk in the fridge? You can store milk porridge with rice in the fridge for 2 days.
