Join me in creating a mouthwatering side dish right in your kitchen! I’m excited to share a simple scalloped potatoes recipe that uses just a few everyday ingredients—it’s sure to delight your taste buds and elevate any meal!
I’m really confused about the names for this dish. Should I call it scalloped potatoes or potatoes au gratin? And then there’s the term “loaded scalloped potatoes with cheese.” Additionally, we have gratin dauphinoise, which utilizes raw potatoes for layering and a sauce made from cream or milk, without the addition of cheese. In a classic scalloped potatoes recipe, the potatoes should actually be precooked before slicing. It’s all a bit overwhelming!
In the end, I’ve decided that if my mom calls this recipe “scalloped potatoes,” then I will use that name as well. It’s my blog, my rules! 😉 I also use sour cream in the sauce, which adds an incredible flavor and texture to the final dish. Thanks to this rich, creamy version of the cheesy sauce, we have an unforgettable side dish to serve, perfect for any holiday or family gathering.

What to Serve With Scalloped Potatoes
The scalloped potatoes side dish is delightful on its own and can easily satisfy your hunger with just one homemade serving. However, I highly recommend pairing it with a salad made of fresh vegetables and a light dressing. Additionally, adding some fish or cooked meat will elevate your meal to perfection. Ingredients for Simple Scalloped Potatoes:

- 8-9 Potatoes;
- 1-2 onions;
- ½ tsp. butter, unsalted;
- ½ tsp. dried basil;
- 4 tbsps. sour cream;
- 50 g cheese, semi-hard;
- 1-2 cloves of garlic;
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to your taste.
How to make homemade potato au gratin:
- Slice peeled potatoes with a knife or you can even use the mandoline slicer to get the thinnest slices. Put them into a deep bowl, season with salt and pepper, mix to cover all the slices evenly.

- In a blender cup, combine sour cream, pressed garlic, salt, pepper, and grated cheese.

- Blend all the ingredients into a smooth mixture using the lowest power.

- Preheat oven at 425ºF/220°C.
- Take a baking dish and smear it with butter. Layout the first layer of potato slices. You will need half of the amount, as there will be only two layers of potato.

- Pour half of the sauce over the first layer of potatoes. Make sure to coat potatoes evenly.

- Next, spread out slices of onion over the first layer of potato slices.

- Repeat the layer of potato slices and then finish with the rest of the sauce. Sprinkle dried basil over the top to add some extra delicious flavor.

- Bake gratin for 45 minutes or until potatoes are easily pierced with a knife. Depending on the thickness of slices and even the variety of bought potatoes it can take you up to one hour to get potato cooked through. Here is a tip: bake scalloped potatoes covered with foil for the first 30 minutes, then remove it and continue baking until potatoes become tender.

- Before serving, make sure to let it cool down a bit to prevent burning. Enjoy your meal!
