As always, there are some nuances to the recipe, which require your attention while making millet porridge at home. Hope that you will find enough information for your experience to be at least bearable for the first time. For me the hardest thing was to understand how to cook milk in the pot with millet. How to get that level of heat right, how often you need to stir that porridge not to get it burned, etc. I tried to include maximum knowledge of the boiling method that I had for you.

What is ratio of water and milk to millet you use for making porridge? As a rule, I take 1 part of millet to 4 parts of liquid (being 2 parts of water + 2 parts of milk in this recipe). However, if you want more runny consistency for you porridge feel free to add up one more part of milk.

How long do you boil millet for porridge? You spend 30 minutes boiling millet overall, 15 minutes in water plus 15 minutes in milk.

What type of pot is best for cooking millet porridge with milk? Try choosing saucepans and pots with a good thick base that will evenly transfer heat on the surface. It will prevent your porridge from burning.

Sweet Millet Porridge Ingredients:

Ingredients for Millet Porridge

  • 1 cup uncooked millet;
  • 2 cups milk;
  • 2 cups water;
  • a pinch of salt;
  • sugar to your taste (1 tbsp.);
  • 1-2 tbsps. unsalted butter.

How to make millet porridge with milk for breakfast:

  • As with every grain, you should rinse thoroughly millet before boiling it on the stove in the pot. Sometimes I use colander and rinse millet under running water, today I place the grain in a deep owl, covered it with water, used hands to stir it several times and then drained the water. My advice would be to add water until it is clear when drained. At least three times.

Rinse millet before boiling

  • Now, add rinsed millet to the pot and cover it with the amount of water that was listed in the ingredients. Put it on the high heat on the stove.

Cover rinsed millet with water

  • When water boils, lower the heat until water starts simmering (on my stove it is the lowest heat). Season porridge with a pinch of salt. Cover the pot with a lid. It can take up to 15 minutes to get rid of water.

Cook millet for 15 minutes

  • Pour preheated milk to the pot with boiled millet.

Add milk to the porridge

  • Wait until milk boils and then adjust heat that milk will be slightly simmering.

Get milk with milk to boil

  • Cook millet porridge for additional 15 minutes on the stove. Try to stir constantly to avoid burning of porridge to the surface.

Cook millet in milk

  • Season porridge with desired amount of sugar and unsalted butter. Cover pot with a lid and set aside for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Add butter and sugar to your taste
